Crowns and Bridges

What are crowns?

Crowns are prosthetic devices cemented onto existing teeth, essentially acting like a “cap” and are used to cover a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed. Crowns are made from porcelain or resin so they can be tailored to precisely match your tooth colour and texture which ensures it goes undetected amid the rest of your unaffected teeth.

The benefits of crowns

Benefits associated with crowns include strengthening and improving the physical appearance of damaged teeth. Crowns can consequently mend teeth that have been chipped of discoloured.

How is the crown fitted?

The procedure of fitting a crown requires a detailed impression of your tooth (or gum, if your tooth is missing) to be made. The impression is then taken and sent off to our manufacturers who will replicate your tooth, allowing a true duplicate to be produced. Upon completion the crown is fitted and permanently bonded to your tooth/teeth.

What is a bridge?

Bridges are made of a tooth-coloured material which can be removable or fixed which are usually used to replace missing teeth. Bridges are prosthetic devices which are anchored to neighbouring teeth for support. Dental bridges look and function like normal teeth and can be hard to distinguish from natural teeth.

Types of bridges

Depending on the position of your missing tooth and the surrounding teeth, there are a variety of bridges to choose from. A fixed bridge requires the bridge to be cemented to the natural teeth (or implants) surrounding the empty space the missing tooth once occupied. Fixed bridges are anchored and cannot be removed from your mouth. The bridge is often fused between two porcelain crowns which fills the area the missing tooth once inhabited.

The benefits of bridges

Bridges may also help reduce risk of gum disease, help correct bites and jaw alignment issues. A bridge can last for more than ten years.
