What is temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ)?

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome causes pain in the jaw joint that can be caused by a variety of medical problems. Temporomandibular joint syndrome is the term used to describe conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint, the point at which the jaw opens and closes. TMJ can be caused by a bad bite as well grinding of the teeth during sleep which can both result in chronic pain for individuals. Additionally, the risk of developing TMJ disorders can be contributed by an individual’s oral health, such as tooth loss or impaired teeth.

Some major signs and symptoms of Temporomandibular joint:

  • Misalignment of muscles and nerves in the TMJ
  • Pain that radiates throughout the entire body
  • Headaches with pain at the temples and side of the head
  • Swelling and pain near the ear or even ringing in the ear
  • Previous trauma to the jaw
  • Inability to open or close the mouth freely
  • Necks and backs cramps
  • Locking jaw
  • Grinding of the teeth

At Metro Dental we offer a range of treatments for TMJ syndrome, including orthodontic and adjunctive therapies to help correct your bite and minimise the pain.

We offer treatments which are tailored to suit each individual, such as a custom-made orthodontic fixtures that are moulded into the neuromuscular bite position. The orthodontic fixture will allow the muscles of the jaw to relax in the measured neuromuscular position. This device is adjusted over time until the correct alignment of the muscles and nerves in the TMJ is achieved. Additionally, our dentist may also assist TMJ patients by placing an appropriate fixture, for example a veneer or a crown which can help stabilise the individual's bite and prevent future probelms arising.

If you suffer from any symptoms listed above, contact one of our offices to learn more about the TMJ treatments we have on offer.
